Vaccination is one of the most important steps you can take to protect your child's health. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) provides a comprehensive vaccination schedule that covers children from birth through adolescence.
Why Follow the IAP Schedule?
The IAP schedule is designed specifically for the Indian context, taking into account the diseases most prevalent in our region. By following this schedule, you ensure your child receives timely protection against serious, preventable diseases.
Key Vaccines by Age
At Birth: BCG, OPV (birth dose), and Hepatitis B (first dose) are given immediately after birth or within the first few days.
6 Weeks to 14 Weeks: This is a critical period where multiple doses of DTwP/DTaP, Hib, IPV, Rotavirus, and PCV are administered in three rounds.
6-9 Months: Influenza vaccine and MMR first dose are given during this period.
12-18 Months: Booster doses for several vaccines, along with Hepatitis A and Varicella.
Tips for Parents
- Keep a vaccination record card and bring it to every clinic visit
- Set reminders for upcoming vaccination dates
- Don't skip or delay vaccines unnecessarily
- Mild cold or cough is usually not a reason to postpone vaccination
- Talk to your pediatrician if you have any concerns about side effects
