How to Manage Fever in Infants: When to Worry, When to Wait

Illness & Symptoms July 10, 2026 6 min read

Fever in infants can be alarming for new parents, but it's important to know that fever itself is not a disease — it's your child's body fighting an infection. Here's what you need to know.

What Temperature is Considered a Fever?

A temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher is considered a fever in infants. Always use a digital thermometer for accurate readings.

When to See a Doctor Immediately

  • Baby is younger than 3 months with any fever
  • Fever above 104°F (40°C) at any age
  • Fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Baby seems unusually lethargic or irritable
  • Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, fewer wet diapers)
  • Rash, difficulty breathing, or persistent vomiting

Home Care Tips

Keep hydrated: Offer frequent breastfeeds or formula. For older babies, small sips of water.

Light clothing: Don't overdress your baby. Keep them in light, comfortable clothing.

Paracetamol: If advised by your doctor, give age-appropriate doses of paracetamol. Never give aspirin to children.

Sponging: Lukewarm (not cold) sponging can help bring down a high fever.

When in doubt, always consult your pediatrician. At Shishu Child Care Clinic, we're available during OPD hours and have emergency support through our partner hospital.
